Gwilym read Law, French Law and Language at the University of Leicester and obtained an upper-second class honours. He also studied French Law at the Université Robert Schuman in Strasbourg and was awarded the Diplôme d'Études Juridiques Français. Gwilym successfully completed the Bar Vocational Course at the College of Law in London achieving a Very Competent grade overall with an Outstanding grade in Advanced Criminal Litigation.
Gwilym joined Angel Chambers in September 2010 following successful completion of his pupillage which was supervised by Dyfed Thomas in criminal law and Matthew Rees in family law. During pupillage Gwilym also undertook written civil work for other members of Chambers.
Crime
Gwilym has a largely court-based practice and regularly acts on behalf of the Prosecution and Defence in Crown and Magistrates' Court hearings. He has prosecuted trials on behalf of the CPS in the Magistrates' Court as well as breach trials for SERCO (Electronic Monitoring). He has also acted on behalf of defendants facing a range of offences including regulatory matters such as Trading Standards and Animal Welfare.
Family
Gwilym is frequently instructed to represent Applicants and Respondents
in private family work concerning residence and contact applications.
Gwilym has experience in contested interim and emergency applications.
He currently has a developing public law children practice and also
accepts instructions in matrimonial finance work.
Civil
Gwilym has been instructed in contested small claims hearings concerned
with road traffic accidents and credit hire as well as hearings ranging
from landlord and tenant matters to infant approval settlements. Prior
to commencing at the Bar Gwilym worked as a freelance County Court Advocate
in London and conducted hearings relating to mortgage possession, charging
orders, applications to strike out and bankruptcy. Despite Gwilym's
predominantly court-based practice he is equally willing to draft or
advise on papers as required.
Gwilym is a fluent Welsh speaker and is willing to undertake instructions in both English and Welsh.
Interests
Gwilym is a keen sportsman and enjoys playing football for his local side. He also enjoys going to watch live music and travelling. Prior to accepting tenancy at Angel Chambers Gwilym worked as a Parliamentary Assistant to a Member of the European Parliament in Strasbourg. He also volunteered as an Appropriate Adult and was responsible for representing the rights of youths during police interviews.
